In Antarctica, an ice shelf bigger than Islamabad has disappeared.

Water is considered to be the most essential component of human life and it is also a fact that three quarters of the earth is water, most of which is seawater while only 3% is clean, drinking water.

Antarctica is the southernmost continent of the world, where the South Pole is located, and the Antarctic ice contains 90% of the world's fresh water, of which 80% is in the eastern part of this frozen continent. Also called South (South frigated zone). It is the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the world, with an average elevation of more than any other continent.

With an area of 14,425 million square kilometers, Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in the world after Asia, Africa, North America and South America. Antarctica is covered with 98% ice, Antarctica is considered to be a vast ice desert where snow is ice and nothing else. There is no permanent place of human life here but scientists from different countries are staying only for research purposes.

Antarctica has not had rain for about two million years. Even so, 80 percent of the world's freshwater reserves are located on the same continent, which, if melted, could raise sea levels up to 60 meters (200 feet).

In Antarctica, the dramatic end of an ice shelf larger than Islamabad was observed in satellite imagery, in which the Conger ice shelf on the east coast of Antarctica can be seen collapsing completely on March 15. The area was equal to one city and it can be said to be bigger than Islamabad. The area of power of the city of Pakistan is just over 906 km but the missing ice shelf covered an area of 1200 sq km.

Satellite images released by NASA expert Catherine Walker show that the ice shelf began to disappear on March 14 and that the ice shelf in the March 16 image did not exist at all. The massive 5800 square kilometers was separated.

Scientists around the world are shocked by the sudden disappearance of the ice shelf, as temperatures in the region were recorded at minus 8.11 degrees Celsius in mid-March, which was 30 degrees above the average for that part of the year.

Therefore, scientists say that it is very difficult to know if the high temperature caused the ice shelf to collapse, but we need to better understand the extent to which the warm weather in East Antarctica melted the ice. What is the effect?

Experts say computer predictions indicate that if toxic gases continue to be emitted into the atmosphere at the same rate, the world's climate will become warmer, causing different parts of the icy continent to melt faster.

Experts say that ice sheets are essential to stop the flow of ice in the oceans of this icy continent because if the ice sheets collapse, the speed of ice flow will increase which will result in an increase in the sea level. Will As a result, sea levels could rise by six feet or more by the end of this century.

Pakistan ranks sixth in the list of water crisis-prone countries in the world and according to global research, the availability of fresh water in South Asia, especially in Pakistan, is declining over time due to growing population and climate change, experts say. That Pakistan may face a complete shortage of water by 2040.

According to experts, Pakistan needs immediate action and planning regarding water on an emergency basis. The country is in dire need of public awareness of saving water and construction of small and big dams immediately.
