Awareness and improved diabetes education is needed to prevent disease-related complications. Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose). There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes , also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate the level of glucose in the blood. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin injections or use an insulin pump to control their blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes , also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes, is a metabolic disorder that occurs when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin or does not produce enough insulin to meet its needs.
